Kate Elizabeth Adams – 56, Truro. It is with deep sadness that the family of Kate Elizabeth Adams announces her passing on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. Kate passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with her family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Kate was born in Heswall, England in 1967. The family moved to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada when she was seven years old before moving to Gores Landing, Ontario. In her grade 7 year, work commitments took the family to Claremont Ferrand, France for 18 months. The family then moved back to Canada where she spent grades 8-11 at Bridgewater High School before graduating from West Pictou High School in 1985.
Kate went on to complete a BSc in Biology from Saint Mary’s University from 1985-1991 where she was also a standout soccer player for the Huskies and in the Sr. Women’s Soccer League. Her devotion to her teammates and her unapologetic competitiveness will never be forgotten. After her first degree, she went on to complete her Bachelor of Science Human Ecology degree from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1996. Upon graduation, Kate became the first Consumer Nutrition Advisor in Atlantic Canada to be employed by a grocery store when she worked for Ryan’s IGA in Truro, Nova Scotia.
She eventually decided to embrace a teaching career, and went back to Mount Saint Vincent University to enroll in the BEd program - a choice that would positively impact the lives of many: the students she taught, coached, and became friends with over the next 20 years. As a teacher, Kate was known to be tireless, innovative, empathetic, highly-skilled and deeply respected and loved by staff and students.
Family meant everything to Kate; she was an amazing wife and partner for 29 years, proud mother of three children and a loving daughter and sister to her immediate family. She had an unmatched devotion to always being there for her family and close friends, who were the most important pieces in her life. Loved ones will remember her beauty and strength during difficult times, her outgoing personality, her loving yet competitive nature, her athletic ability (which friends consistently pointed out that she passed on to her kids), her toughness, and her dislike for tardiness.
Many friends and house guests can also attest to her mastery of adding fun to any gathering with her Jello-shots. She was a role model to many in the community, and an inspiration to those around her both professionally and personally. Though the last few years were difficult, she carried herself with strength and dignity and continued to only think of those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of all her best traits in her children who consistently made her proud to be their mother. They will honor her memory as they move forward without her. She was more than we deserved, and the world will be less without her; her family and friends are grateful for all that she was.
Kate is survived by her husband, Rob; their three children, Michael, Leah, Jenna; mother, Jill (Gordie) Holstead; father, Darrell (Sue) Evans; sisters, Joanne (Dennis) McPhee, Nikki Evans; brothers, Andy (Carla) Evans, Dan (Michelle) Evans, Gareth Evans; many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to thank all the staff involved in her care over the last two years, especially the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro.
At her request there will be no visitation or public service at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a local food bank.
