Eastern Passage, NS
April 22, 1963 - September 17, 2024
After a courageous and hard fought battle with cancer, it is with deep sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph William Barrett, better known to all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him as Joe or Joey. As was his last wish, Joe passed away (much too soon) at his home in Alton at the age of 61 on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
Joe was born on April 22, 1963 in Halifax and was proud to be raised in Eastern Passage where he is still well known and respected. Joe spent the majority of his career as a Longshoreman on the Halifax Waterfront where he worked for over 30 years (mostly the “gravy” shifts) and was a proud member of ILA, Local 269. He retired last year.
Joe was predeceased by his mother, Lillian Barrett; his father and cohort, John Henneberry Senior, his beloved sister Karen Barrett (Kamal Hanna); his nephew, Chris Henneberry; his past love Elizabeth Young; and his beloved and spoiled fur babies, Lily and Bella.
Joe is survived by his loving brother John Henneberry (who was by his side every day of his battle along with his fiancé Alyse Brayley); sister Theresa Mosher (Robert); step-sister Shawna Henshaw; niece and god child Cassy Hanna, affectionately known to Joe as “fart” and “kid”; nephew Timmy; niece Allison Mosher; nephew Andrew Mosher; great-nephew Jace Boudreau; and many others including aunts, uncles and cousins; his very dear friend Michelle Burton Hannam; and his ILA, Local 269 union brothers and sisters. Joe is also survived and dearly missed by his best friend Kim Howells (Quentin). Kim has loved him and had his back from the day they met almost 30 years ago including every step of the way during his illness. As they promised each other many years ago, they will always be forever friends.
Joe, we found you out . . . some of us thought your nickname for us was individual but it has now been discovered that you called many you held dear “kid”! All those who had the pleasure of calling Joe family or friend know that in his younger years he had a love for four wheeling and hunting. He was a free spirit with a not to be tested short fuse. In more recent years, he had a love for watching the deer and other wildlife on his property. Joe also liked making the rounds visiting with those he enjoyed spending time with. Joe was generous and protective of his loved ones and always stood up for the underdog, helping those in need whether it was listening to a friend’s problems; sticking up for someone being bullied; giving change to strangers down on their luck; or buying groceries for a friend in need.
The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Team at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, in particular Dr. Henderson and the many Palliative Care nurses, for their compassionate care to Joe where he, along with his roommate Kim, spent 8 long weeks before his wish to go home was achieved and he was able to finally enjoy “good food” and spend time on his deck with family and friends chatting, watching his deer and watching the beautiful sunsets.
As we mourn our loss, please remember that today and forever Joe is at peace and flies free, reunited with those he loved and lost, his parents, his sister, his nephew, his dogs and his Elizabeth. He will forever reside in the hearts and memories of his family and friends.
