Peter John Bernard Bornhym, 93, passed away peacefully September 3rd, 2024.
Born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, he was the son of Peter John Bernard and Henriette Geertrudia (Vos) Bornhym.
He is survived by his daughter Patricia Mary, Dartmouth; sister Iet deWitte, Almere, brother Johannes (Hans) and sister in law Barbara (Bep) Bornhym in Amsterdam.
He is pre-deceased by wife Helen Marina Wallace.
Dad was a Pastry Chef by trade. He immigrated to Canada in 1954 and opened his own bakery in 1959 in Chatham, New Brunswick. He excelled at whatever he put his hand to and had many hobbies. He loved his vegetable garden and tended to it until the day he died. He walked every day and was well known in his community of East River Point. He was an excellent carpenter from building furniture pieces to remodeling the inside of an old school house to become a family home. He had his own painting business in Florida.
The kitchen was his happy place and he was always baking, cooking, canning or researching new recipes and methods. For many years he had a small boat and enjoyed being on the water fishing, swimming, or just bobbing along reading a book. He wrote a 50 year autobiography plus two cookbooks and was working on his third. Dad enjoyed talking to people and was known for telling entertaining stories drawn from the events of his life.
At the age of 84 he began artistic painting with acrylics and did not let a shattered humerus at the age of 87 stop him from painting; he learned to paint with his other hand and his paintings were as good and better. He had an exhibition of his works at Ross Farm Museum shortly before he passed.
He was a wonderful father and will be dearly missed.
