Nova (Sissy) Benetta Byard, 71, of Dartmouth and formerly Truro Nova Scotia, lovingly and peacefully surrounded by family went home to be with the lord on October 21, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Lenard and Norma (Sheppard) Byard.
Nova is survived by her daughter Tia (Ernie) Hathaway, Dartmouth, and Shawn (Jessica)Byard, Alberta, Grandchildren Jesiah (Kayla) Hathaway, Marcus and Mariah Byard and great grand children Dominic and Deklyn.
Brothers Ingram “Butch” (Marion) Byard, Sister Belinda (Tom) Bennicke, brother Kim Byard, sister Mary Byard, and brother Freeman (Cheryl) Byard and many nieces, nephews who were like her own children and cousins. Along with her parents she was predeceased by her partner, Steve Stunell, brother Leonard Byard, sister Norma Jane Clyke and brother Percy Byard.
Nova was a longtime member of Zion United Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years with her sister Norma. Nova was a hairdresser by trade in her earlier years and often visited the homes of her family and friends to do their hair while gossiping in the kitchen. She spent many of her later years doing housekeeping and being a caregiver. She was known throughout the community for her ability to always make somebody laugh by telling a story and laughing the whole time she was telling it. In her quiet time, she could be found listening to her gospel or country music, making fudge, yankee doodle squares, cabbage rolls, knitting dish cloths or making special treats for her family. You could drop in to her place at any time and she would feed you out the door while sharing lots of laughs.
Special thanks to the palliative care team, amazing nurses and doctors on 5 west at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Their kindness and compassion did not go unnoticed and will forever be remembered.
Donations can be made in Nova’s honour to the Dartmouth, General Hospital Foundation. Visitation will be 3:00 pm.- 4:00 pm. Tuesday October 29, 2024 followed by a memorial service both in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street, Dartmouth.
Burial will be Wednesday October 30, 2024 in Robie Street Cemetery, Truro.
