Layton joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1957, where he was trained in telecommunications. From there he went on to have a successful career at Environment Canada’s Weather Service. Layton had several passions in his lifetime, but his greatest passion was his family. He adored all his grandchildren and felt blessed to become a great grandfather. He enjoyed all holidays with family and sporting events. Layton coached all his children along with their friends in the Shubenacadie community area. He enjoyed fishing, no matter the weather. He loved bird watching, especially his cardinals, painting, tying fish flies, and family genealogy. Layton took great pleasure in sitting back and looking at his freshly mowed lawn.
