CHAPMAN, Eldon McCurdy (Chappy)

North River, NS

January 23, 2024

Eldon McCurdy "Chappy" Chapman – 80, North River, passed away unexpectedly at home, as a result of heart failure, on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Gerald and Beatrice (Wellwood) Chapman.

Eldon worked for CN/VIA for over 30 years as a brakeman and conductor. An avid sportsman, he was well-known in the Truro area for his incredible softball pitching abilities and became "Truro Famous" in 1981 when he threw a no-hitter while on the Fletcher’s Flames team; he also played with Brookfield Elks, Ponderosa Screaming Eagles and also for many fundraising softball games and tournaments. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling and hockey and was inducted into the Truro Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He enjoyed playing 45s at the Air Force Club, playing poker at Emmerson Club and was a pool shark who was very good at billiards.

His grandkids brought him great joy and he loved going for drives with them, eating out and train trips. Eldon’s dry sense of humour will be "missed", especially his never ending supply of "Dad Jokes" which would make you roll your eyes and have you grumbling; the more you laughed, the more he would laugh with you!

Eldon is survived by his children, Mark (Lisa) Chapman, Sackville; Jacqueline Lisa Chapman (Ron Taylor), Bedford; Sacha Chapman (Anthony Mahar), Truro Heights; Shane Chapman, North River; grandchildren, Bria Woods, Nick Chapman, Lauren Chapman, Max Mahar, Luke Mahar; siblings, David Chapman, Barrie, Ontario; Geraldine (Mike) Wheten, Central Onslow; Shirley Henderson, Truro; Doreen Trahan, Chatham, Ontario; Esther Hare, Chatham, Ontario; Nova Chapman, Belle River, Ontario; brothers-in-law, Peter Tam, Harmony; Ed McKibbon, Scarborough, Ontario; several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Sandra (Bylund); siblings, George (Nancy) Chapman, Lloyd Chapman, Gail McKibbon, Donna Chapman, Leona Tam.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date and will be announced at that time. If so desired, donations in Eldon’s memory to Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro (Building Fund) are welcomed.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
