Corkum, Carrol Reid – Age 97 of Bridgetown, formerly Inglisville, passed away surrounded by loving family at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, on February 7, 2024.
Born in Paradise on March 12, 1926, he was a son of the late Olive (Corkum) Whitman. Carrol was raised by his grandparents, Allen and Minna (Fancy) Corkum, in New Elm, Lunenburg Co., and then in Inglisville. This is where Carrol met “his girl” Laura and married her June 5, 1946. Carrol was dedicated to his family, God, and community. He worked from a very young age but spent most of his working years with the Department of Lands and Forest, Lawrencetown. He was a labourer, drove a tractor, and also delivered trees to places as far as Cape Breton.
If Carrol wasn’t working, he loved watching horse and oxen pulls at the exhibitions in Lawrencetown and Bridgewater, going to the woods and to the camp. He enjoyed planting a garden, milling lumber, making apple boxes to sell, going for long walks and attending local jam sessions. He liked to keep busy and was always willing to learn something new.
Carrol could play the guitar and mouth organ and at the age of 92, he learned to play the ukulele and kazoo.
He is survived by son, Kenneth (Janet) Corkum, Inglisville; daughter, Marcia (Gary) Wentzell, Brickton; daughter in heart, Debbie Hines, Nictaux; grandchildren, Desi Corkum, Inglisville; Holly Wentzell, Inglisville; Melissa Marshall, Middleton; Paul Wentzell, Brickton; 10 great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; sister Frances Whynott. Besides his mother and grandparents,
Carrol was predeceased by his wife, Laura (Beals) Corkum; daughter, Carol Ann Corkum; great grandson, Ethan Chesley; sister, Betty O’Neil; brothers, Lawrence, and Lester Whitman.
There will be no visitation by request. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 11, 2024, in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, Middleton, toll free 1-855-825-3448, with Rev. Eugene Foster officiating, followed by a reception. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Inglisville Baptist Church or Inglisville Community Hall.
