Cox, Donald Brian

Caledonia Mills, NS

January 5, 2025

Cox, Donald Brian, age 96, of Caledonia Mills, Antigonish County, passed away on January 5, 2025, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Born in Dartmouth, he was a son of the late Clyde and Annie (Gilfoy) Cox.

Donald started working at the age of 10, delivering groceries for Teasdale’s Grocery in Dartmouth by horse and buggy, a task that would often take him all day.  He later became a butcher for Teasdale’s.  In 1953, he joined the armed forces and was stationed in Germany as a peacekeeper.  Upon returning to Canada, he took a job with the City of Dartmouth’s water department, becoming superintendent.  In 1978, he moved to Caledonia Mills, having taken a job as superintendent of the Antigonish Regional High School.  In the late 80s, he returned to public works, taking a job with the Town of Antigonish’s water department.

Donald built his own log house in Caledonia Mills.  He was an avid gardener, and he loved hunting and fishing and spending time at his cabin.  He was fond of all animals, especially his pet dogs and cats.  Donald also looked forward to hosting corn boils, 2-for-1 at Mother Webb’s, and an ice cream from Dairy Queen.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna (Vincent) Eastwood, Caledonia Mills; granddaughter, Kimberley (Roger) Pitts, Caledonia Mills; grandson, Michael (Megan McLaren), Vancouver; great grandchildren, Kyle, Avery, and Auden; special niece, Carol Romaine, Truro; many other nieces and nephews; and Dorothy Peach, who held a special place in his heart.

Predeceased by his wife, Marion; brothers, Allen, Clyde, and George; and sister, Mabel.

Cremation has taken place, and a private family burial will take place in South River Cemetery, St. Andrews.

A corn boil in Donald’s honour will take place at a later date.

In Memoriam, donations to the Kidney Foundation, the Lung Association, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation appreciated.
