I Am Third: Mrs. Carmelita Forewell

By Darrell Young

In Life its never about what you were born with or without, its about who you become as a person through your lifelong journey. There are people who rise and there are people who fall during the journey. Carmelita was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia by the wonderful, caring women named Margaret Macdonald. Margaret passed away when Carmelita was sixteen years of age. It was then that she legally took on her mother’s last name, Macdonald.

Carmelita moved to Halifax to help her sister-in-law raise her six young children. Who does that but a woman of God, a woman who believes in family. Sally’s family became her family as she helped raise Graham, Charlene, Ian, Patrick, Carmie and Frank. As the six children grew into adults their love, respect for Carmelita grew as they became a big part of her life.

When I first met Mrs. Forewell and her late husband Jim over 40 years ago, I was amazed at this ladies’ love for life, for God and that she was at peace with what life has dealt her. Mrs. Forewell never treated me as a son in law but as a son. I remember as a teenager reading a book titled ‘I am third “meaning God, Family and I. This describes Carmelita Forewell better known as Nanny by her grandchildren.

Our children, Connor, Mackenzie and Cullen were the beneficiaries of a loving grand mother who loved them to the very end. There was nothing she would not do for them. Her love was unconditional. When they were growing up they had the good fortune of seeing their grandmother every week and most weeks than once; plus there were many, many sleepovers.

Mrs. Forewell was constantly present at sporting and school events. Never one to miss her grandchildren’s day in the sun. Those Sunday’s dinners in her small, crowded kitchen were legendary as were her apple pies and her gravy. We were all happy being together, but no one more than Carmelita, her laugh and smile said it all.

She lived a simple life, but it was never easy. Never one to ask for anything, instead she gave to anyone in need. Never one to complain, she thanked God for life and family. What more can one ask for. I wish we could all live life like Carmelita, always taking care of her family putting them first. Nanny will be missed by all.
