David George Gammon – 74, of Coldbrook, passed away February 3, 2024 in Orchard Court-Shannex, Kentville with his loving wife and two daughters at his side. Born July 22, 1949 in Dartmouth NS, son of the late Raymond and Hazel (Patterson) Gammon.
David grew up in Dartmouth and spent the last 50 years with his wife in the Annapolis Valley. His career in construction started early in Dartmouth with Frank Spinney which led him to move to the Valley where he worked with both Frank and Greg Spinney, and they remained lifelong friends.
During the early 1980s he was co-owner of Valley Scrap, Kentville with Frank Piwek. He and Frank spent some memorable and enjoyable years in the scrap business which included dismantling the Windsor Bridge, the Graves Juice plant and a fish plant in Lunenburg. Remnants of his scrap business remained with him throughout his lifetime including the apple juice cans that he stored his nails and screws in and many pieces of metal he saved for future use. After the scrap business David was a self-employed carpenter building new homes, doing small repairs and odd jobs around the valley. He was always willing to help anyone out. He ended his career working as the maintenance manager at the Blomidon Inn in Wolfville, NS.
David was a member of St. Paul & St. Stephen United Church, Kentville until it closed in 2014.
One of his favourite pastimes was playing cards and he often stopped on his way home to have a cup of tea and cookie with his mother-in-law, Pauline and play a game of Rummy. He also looked forward to the Sunday afternoons spent at her house with Vicki playing Rook and having a DQ Meal Deal. His other regular pastime was Saturday morning community breakfast in any of the local communities with his good friend, David Corkum. His favourites were the fishcakes at St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, and in Morden where he always purchased two extra fish cakes to take to his older friend Bryson Crowell.
David enjoyed the little things life had to offer – a good cup of tea, a nice cookie or muffin, a walk with his wife, be it on a beach, in the woods or just down the road. He had a strong moral compass. Even when he had a serious injury on the job you would only hear "shoot or sugar" out of his mouth. And in these last few years he handled the challenges presented by Lewy Body Dementia with grace.
David is survived by his wife, Victoria "Vicki" and two daughters, Keri (Collin), Coldbrook; and Krista (Travis) Moore and grandchildren, Sophia and Parker Moore, Freeport, Digby Co., NS; brother, Percy (Cathy), Fall River NS; sister, Susan (Brian) George, Phillips Harbour, NS; his mother-in-law, Pauline MacGregor, Greenwich NS; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Stanley, aunts and uncles.
The family would like to thank the staff at Med A Valley Regional Hospital and at Mountain Lea Lodge. Special thanks to all staff, CCAs, LPNs and RNs at Orchard Court for their kindness and compassionate support during the year he was there.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside service and celebration of life will take place in the spring.
