Gertridge, Gladys Shirley (Weatherbee), age 91, of Gaspereau Mountain, died on June 17, 2024 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.
Born in Wolfville, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Maude (Barkhouse) Weatherbee and stepdaughter of the late Evelyn "Dolly" (Shay) Weatherbee.
Gladys graduated from Wolfville High School, where she played on the junior, intermediate and senior basketball teams. She worked most of her life in the Wolfville area. She taught school and she and her husband Ross were foster parents. She then went on to work for H&R Block for 14 years, and Acadia University bookstore part time for 21 years. When she was younger she worked part time for Save Easy and Steadmans’ stores, and part time at The Palms Restaurant while going to school.
Gladys was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion Wolfville Dr. C.B. Lumsden Branch No.74 and an associate member of the branch. She was a life member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Korean Veterans Association, Nova Scotia Unit. Gladys loved music, dancing, camping with her husband, children and grandchildren, skating, travelling, spending a few winters in Florida with her best friend and companion, David Appleby.
Gladys is survived by her son, Darren (Tina), Sunken Lake; daughters, Merle (Merle) Rogers, Forest Hill; and Mary Jo (Leslie) Cox, Grand Pre; six grandchildren whom she loved very much, Kendall Rogers, Joshua and Nathan Cox, Samantha, Morgan and Amber Gertridge; five great-grandchildren, Braden, Ethan, Ross, Brittany and Everleigh; great-great granddaughter, Maisie; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ross; sister, Phyllis Crowell; brother, Harris Weatherbee; stepsisters, Jessie Comeau and Madeline Benjamin; her best friend and companion, David Appleby (Gagetown, NB); and grandson-in-law, Dyllan (Levy) Cuthill.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 24 in the Gaspereau Cemetery, Kings County. Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. A reception will follow at the Gaspereau Community Hall.
Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Arthritis Society, Lung Association or charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
