Green, Joanne Mary

Mahone Bay, NS

September 23, 2024

Dr. Joanne Mary Green (nee MacArthur) of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia died peacefully on September 23, 2024 with her family by her side. Joanne lived life with a joyful spirit and leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity.

Born and raised in Dartmouth, Joanne was an outgoing, creative and kind-hearted person who loved people, art, all animals, and nature. A competitive swimmer with the Dartmouth Crusaders up to Acadia University, she chose to live her life on the water. She enjoyed visiting (occasionally secret) beaches and watching the sailboats; even buying her own with her husband Scott. In 2021 and 2023, she took on The Big Swim across the Bras D’Or Lakes and Northumberland Strait to support Brigadoon Village, which reflected her belief in giving back.

Joanne held a strong curiosity for the natural world, and her love of science reflected her sharp intellect and constant desire to learn. Joanne was an accomplished dentist alongside Scott and their “second family” at Hillside Family Dental, and having always wanted to be a teacher, she became a certified yoga and swimming instructor following her professional career. Yoga became an important source of purpose and spirituality.

Joanne’s creative spirit allowed her to share her many gifts through heartfelt notes, knitting projects, beach glass and driftwood art, homemade birthday cakes, and her beautiful garden. She loved to sing, often to her beloved dogs Zach, Max, Uli, and then Tilley, and she recently joined international singing competitions with the Seaside Acapella group. Joanne had a spirited sense of humor, a quick and supportive smile, and a great memory for detail. She loved to travel and was always ready for adventure.

Joanne taught us the importance of being present and living in the moment, and that nothing was too small or insignificant to be celebrated. She was a dedicated mother to her children, driving thousands of hours to and from school and sports, never missing a game even in other provinces, and always there helping to navigate life’s challenges and achievements. Her weekly visits to her grandchildren, and the joy she found in being part of their lives, was a testament to how much she cared.

Joanne is survived by her devoted husband of 29 years Scott Green; her children Matthew Clow (Lauren Hutton), their sons Gavin and Peter; Stuart Clow (Margaret Schwartz); brother Bruce MacArthur (Dale), and sisters Joan Hensler (Bruce) and Elizabeth (Libby) Levatte. She was predeceased by her parents; Mother Myrtle MacArthur (Hayden), Father Dr. Donald MacArthur, and stepmother Betty MacArthur, as well as her brother Ian MacArthur. Joanne will be fondly remembered by her many cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.

Cremation has taken place at South Shore Crematorium. In keeping with her wishes, she will be surrounded by her family for a private ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, her family kindly requests that donations be made to Brigadoon Village: http://support.brigadoonvillage.org/goto/JoanneGreen
