Frederick “Fred” Howlett CWO (ret) RCAF, age 92 Frederick (Fred)

John Howlett, passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on March 24th 2025 having lived a full and remarkable life.

Fred was married to Sheila Howlett for 46 years. Following her death in 2002, Fred moved to Dartmouth from Ottawa. He was most fortunate to share a deep and lasting relationship with Fran MacPhail, whose companionship brought him much joy and comfort for nearly twenty years.

Fred is survived by his four sons: Michael (Kelly), David (Barbara), Todd (Katherine), Richard (Michelle), and nine grandchildren: Danielle, Rachel, Scott, Rebekah, Olivia, Sarah, Paul, Martin, Austin and one great-grandson, Vincent.

A proud RCAF veteran, Fred dedicated 30 years to his country, rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He led with integrity, earning the respect of those who served alongside him. Fred worked another decade for the federal government before becoming a consultant, often travelling to sites in Nova Scotia for work.

Growing up in Petrolia, Ontario, Fred could not have imagined all the places he would visit both on and off the job. His work as a radar technician with the RCAF took him and his growing family to various towns situated along the Pine Tree Line such as Dana, SK, and Kapuskasing, ON. Fred and his family spent two four-year deployments in Germany starting in the1950s and again in the1970s. He also worked in the North on various assignments. He often spoke with quiet reverence of his time there. Many of Fred’s stories revolved around these experiences.

From Chile to Australia, and Latvia to Cuba, Fred enjoyed exploring the world. In his later years, his favorite place was his house in the heart of Dartmouth, where he was lucky enough to have a community of neighbours (and their pets) who cared and supported him.

Fred was never happier than when he had an audience for his stories. He loved to share his memories with friends old and new. His easy charm and friendly manner were appreciated by many. He was a proud father and grandfather.

He will be greatly missed.
