Irwin, John "Sandy"

Halifax, NS

June 14, 1941 - September 12, 2024

Sandy passed away peacefully and courageously on September 12, 2024, at the age of 83, following a lifetime of wonderful memories and achievements, in the company of his beloved wife and life partner of 46 years, Julia (Donovan).

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, on June 14, 1941, he was son of the late Fred and Doris (Gill) Irwin. At age six, his family returned to Nova Scotia where he attended school in Dartmouth and spent the summers of his youth at Keltic Lodge in Ingonish, Cape Breton, where his father was the proud general manager for 25 years.

Sandy had a notable and expansive career. Following in his father’s footsteps, the hotel industry was his initial calling where he held various management positions and was recognized with numerous awards. An explorer at heart, his career took him to Bermuda, The Bahamas, Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta. Known for his good wit and charm he joined the entertainment team of Swedish American Line where he spent a year cruising around the world and would often recount stories from his travels.

Wishing to plant roots, Sandy eventually settled down in Oakville, Ontario and became a successful entrepreneur. After establishing several companies downtown Toronto, Sandy co-founded CCNS Corporate Services Ltd., Canada’s first and largest name search house which he eventually sold to head into early retirement and return to his cherished Nova Scotia.

With a strong desire for connection, Sandy was an active member of the community throughout his life. His most recent activities included volunteering with Bedford United Church and Oakfield Golf and Country Club where he established strong friendships.

Sandy is predeceased by his younger brother, Terry (spouse Elizabeth, children David and Sarah Blair) and grieved by his elder brothers, Gerald (spouse Denyse, children Scott and Michelle) and Richard (spouse Florence, children Rick and Keri), and treasured extended family.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Natalie of Ottawa, Ontario, and Annette of Stockholm, Sweden, along with two adorable grandchildren, Isabelle and his namesake, Beckham John.

By request, no flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Bedford United Church or the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
