Eastern Passage, NS
February 15, 1933 - December 3, 2024
Farewell to a beautiful lady! Hazel Lucretia Joyce (nee Myers) took her last breath on December 3, 2024.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut on February 15, 1933 to Maurice and Beatrice (nee Guilford) Myers, she returned with her family to Eastern Passage at age three, and lived there for the rest of her life.
She was sister to Roy and Raymond (deceased in infancy); James (Marg), Patricia (Len) Shaw, Jean (Frank) Murphy, John (Sharon), all deceased; and her surviving sister Velma (Alf) Gibson of Cambridge Ontario. Hazel met and married Larry Joyce in 1955, and together they had one daughter, Cathy (Miller) Patriquin. Over the years, her family grew to include three grandsons, Jeff (Jessica), Glenn (Julia), and Kyle (Crystal) Patriquin, and eight great-grandchildren: Alivia, Elliot, Nathaniel, Cooper, Molly, Gwendalynn, Aldun, and John.
Hazel began her working life at Woodlawn Dairy and years later at the Eastern Passage Post Office, where she began part-time and worked up to the position of Postmaster, from which she retired after 38 years. Hazel was a dedicated member of her community: as a volunteer at Ocean View Continuing Care for over five decades; an active parishioner of St. Andrew’s Church; a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 59 years; a long-time supporter at Hope Cottage; and a participant in every Terry Fox Run since its inception in 1981 to her last walk in 2024. Ever inspirational, Hazel earned many accolades for her service, including the Archdiocesan Medal of Merit, Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers; and the Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilee Medals.
Her leisure time was spent playing bingo, knitting, enjoying game shows and soap operas, watching the traffic from her rocking chair by the window, and taking in countless baseball games played by her grandsons and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hope Cottage, Ocean View Continuing Care, or Margaret House (Dartmouth), all very dear to her heart.
Visitation Monday, December 9th, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the Eastern Passage Community Funeral Home. Funeral Mass Tuesday, December 10th, 11am at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church, Eastern Passage. Reception to follow at the Eastern Passage Lion’s Club.
