Melina Victoria (Comeau) Killam of Arichat, Richmond County, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully at Strait Richmond Hospital on December 18, after a lengthy illness.
Melina was born in West Arichat, Cape Breton on October 10, 1940 the first child of Valerie (Theriault) and Gus Comeau. The family moved to Halifax but spent many holidays with her grandparents, Leo and Victoria Theriault of West Arichat., Richmond County, NS.
It was determined as a toddler that Melina was deaf and she subsequently attended the School for the Deaf in Halifax where she made many friends, many to this day. She was very artistic and enjoyed many crafts throughout the years. Melina and her husband Purdy enjoyed many activities within the deaf community over the years.
Melina leaves behind her husband Purdy Killam of 53 years, a brother Paul (Dianne) Comeau and family of Ontario, sister Yvonne (Comeau) Barlock (and son of New Hampshire) and her spouse Michael Hagenbuch of Maine, sister Valerie (Carl) Dimitroff and family of PEI. Melina also leaves a daughter Debbie Mikkelsen, husband John and two grown grandchildren.
Melina was predeceased by her parents, and brothers Michel Comeau and Rene Comeau. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews and dear friends.
After attending the School for the Deaf for about 10 years she lived with family in Newcastle, Moncton, and Bathurst New Brunswick where she worked in retail, inventory and also did some window displays. She married Purdy Killam in June of 1971. Together they initially lived and worked in Halifax for a short while but mostly in Arichat, Richmond County for the past 50 years.
Services and internment to be held at a later date. Special thanks to the staff at St Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish and Strait Hospital in Evanston, NS.
Memorial donations can be made in her honor at either hospital.
