MacDonald (Barrington), Maureen Donna

Sydney, NS

September 12, 1943 – September 22, 2024

Maureen Donna (Barrington) MacDonald, 81 born on September 12, 1943 in Sydney, second eldest daughter to the late Yorke & Cecilia (MacKinnon) Barrington, of Walter’s Lane, passed away very peacefully on September 22nd surrounded by family.

Maureen is survived by her extraordinary husband, Albert S MacDonald of 53 years, as well as her treasured children of whom she adored: Craig (Leslee) MacDonald, Curt MacDonald (Alison Maglario) and Shirley (Nolan) Peters. Also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Lauchie, Marlee and Malcolm who were “her WHOLE WORLD”.

Maureen was known for her fantastic personality, thoughtfulness and bringing joy to all those around her. She started her career at Jacobson’s, moving on to ATV news. Shortly after, she and Albert began their beautiful family often watching the submarine races in the North end. She taught many children to swim and water-ski at Ben Eoin Beach as well as being a wonderful water-skier herself. She was ahead of her time, practicing yoga for over 30 years and you would be remiss if you didn’t notice ‘Moe‘ dressed to the nines while matching her lipstick to every outfit. She was the most talented crafter between knitting, quilting, needlepoint, doing puzzles, decorating for various weddings and other events. The neighborhood often anticipated how the house in Howie Center would transform on each occasion.

Maureen went back to work at the front desk at the Cape Bretoner before “retiring” to the office at her piece of heaven, no shortage of laughs and smiles as all the campers arrived at Ben Eoin Beach to spend their summers with her together.

Moe never passed up a good opportunity to scare anyone, often taking pointers from her partner in crime, Albert.

She was pivotal in bringing people together whether it was the Barrington family reunion of 1998 or the famous 12 Days of Christmas.

Later in life, she thoroughly enjoyed her monthly ‘club’ with her ladies.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Roddie Barrington and brother-in-law John Madinsky.

She is survived by siblings Hilda, Wes, Michealette, Pam, Ed, Yorke, Keith, John, many nieces, and nephews along with a large extended family.

Thank you to Dr. Chow, Dr. MacKay and Dr. Ritter as well as Andrea Marisa, ED RN along with the Palliative Care Team. We especially would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the incredible nurses with VON; you made her day, every day. A special thanks to Aunt Lorraine for unwavering support and always being there for her and us, you were her best friend. Cremation has taken place. Mom’s wishes were to have a private family service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CBRF Mental Health & Addictions Patient Care Fund or charity of choice.
