July 6, 1951 - September 16, 2024
MacDonnell, Lucille "Lu" Marie - 73, Oxford, passed away peacefully at East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, on September 16th, 2024.
Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Agnes (Whare) Horne. After graduating from St. Peter's High School, Dartmouth Lu went on to graduate from Mount Saint Vincent University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Economics. She would later obtain a specialist license as a dispensing optician from the Nova Scotia Board of Dispensing Opticians.
After moving with her husband Byron to Cumberland County, Lu went to work as a dental assistant for Dr. Bob Rix in Pugwash and then for Dr.'s Graham Conrad Sr. and Jr. and later in Oxford for Dr. Terry Hupman and finally for Dr. Jainin Wolfe, retiring in 2010 as an assistant and office manager. Lu was very community minded and was active over the years with the Oxford Area Lionettes, Oxford Home & School, Oxford Minor Hockey Assoc. and served on the Oxford Tourism Committee.
She enjoyed skiing, golf and was an avid walker, whether it was at home in Oxford with Susan Rector or on the sands of a local beach or while visiting one down south during the winter in Myrtle Beach and Florida. Family was a priority for Lu, especially when it came to her two boys Sean and Mark and more recently grandson, Sam.
Lucille always seemed to have a positive attitude towards people and life. Her belief was that "people will forget what you did but will remember how you made them feel." This outlook served her well. She is now "walking with the angels".
She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Byron; son, Sean (Amanda) and grandson, Sam, of Colorado; son, Mark (Julie), Leamington; sisters, Catherine Baker, Halifax; Anne Marie Horne-Robinson, Toronto; Janet (Doug) Cameron, Antigonish; brothers, Don Horne, Chester; Mike Horne, PEI; sister-in-law, Margot (Randy) Hollis, Dartmouth; sister from another mother, Heather MacDonald, Oxford; many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place under the care of MacDiarmid's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Oxford. A celebration of Lucille's life will take place at 2 pm Monday, September 30 in Trinity United Church, Oxford.
A reception will follow in the church vestry. Burial will be in Leamington Cemetery.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to all the staff at East Cumberland Lodge for their empathy, respect and kindness shown to my wife, our mother, Lucille, during her brief stay; special thanks and gratitude to Nicole and Ryan, who provided her comfort.
Donations may be made in Lu's memory to the East Cumberland Lodge, Oxford Community Centre or charity of choice.
