Maddalena, Mary Evelyn (Van Tassell)

Halifax, NS

Evelyn passed away at the age of 96 in Halifax on September 20, 2024.


She was born in Boston, Mass. to Martin and Eva (Melanson) Van Tassell. During the Great Depression her family relocated back to the homestead property at Van Tassel Lake in Mount Pleasant, Digby County. Her mother died when Evelyn was age 6 and she was then raised in Culloden by her sister Annie.


After high school, Evelyn moved to Halifax where she worked as a secretary for the General Seafood Company. She met the love of her life and future husband Gino at an Olympic Gardens dance. Following their marriage in 1951 they resided in Montreal until 1967 when they moved to Halifax.


After raising her sons, Evelyn went to work in various administrative jobs and pursued various university courses. In 1985 Gino and Evelyn established Tangram Surfaces Inc. which eventually became Centura Atlantic the largest flooring distributorship business in Atlantic Canada with locations in Dartmouth, Moncton, NB and Mount Pearl, NL.


She was predeceased by her husband Gino, infant son David, brother Charlie and sister Annie. She is survived by sons Michael (Kathy), Victor (Debbie) and Peter, 10 grandchildren - Aeneas (Megan), Joseph (Lauren), Martha (Shane), Mary (Mark), Marcus (Brittany), Micah, Anthony (Brenna), Sophia (Alex), Lillian, Violet, and 10 great-grandchildren.


In her retirement she found a love for painting, especially in watercolour. She was a long time member of several painting groups. She also found enjoyment playing bridge, a game she took up in her 80s.


Evelyn was a kind and friendly person to everyone she met. She will be missed by her family and friends.


A memorial service will be held for Evelyn at Snow’s Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Friday October 25, 2024 at 2p.m..


In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation in her name to the Keshen Goodman Public Library, 330 Lacewood Drive as Evelyn was an avid book reader and frequent visitor to this library.
