Martell, Richard James

Lower L'Ardoise, NS

September 7, 1936 - September 22, 2024

MARTELL, Richard, of Lower L’Ardoise, passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at the Strait Richmond Hospital on September 22nd, 2024, at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving partner Patricia and his niece Cindy.

Richard was born in Rockdale, NS on September 7th, 1936, to the late Patrick William and Henrietta Martell.

He is survived by his loving partner of 52 years, Patricia (Stewart), his son Ricky (Darryl) Martell of Halifax, daughter Louise Martell of Halifax and stepdaughter April (Wayne) Stewart of Little Bra d’Or. His sister Blanch Dort of Prospect, Brother-in-law Brian Mombourquette of Lower L’Ardoise and his many nieces and nephews with special mention to Curtis (Janine) of Grand Greve, Lois of New Waterford and Sharla (Robert) of Arichat.

He was predeceased by his parents and brothers: Ronald, Patrick, Clarence, Angus and Billy and two brothers in infancy. Sisters: Mary Ellen, Edna, Betty, Jenny, Kathleen and Lena.

Richard's career started in Halifax as a stevedore, where he was later employed by Dartmouth Building Supplies and before retirement he worked at the Red Fox Tavern for 16 years.

Richard enjoyed a wonderful life filled with lots of love and laughter. He was a great storyteller and loved to share stories of his school days at Rockdale High. His garage was his happy place where he kept every tool in order and his lawn tractor in tip top shape. His garage would be sure to have an eight-track player on and he could be heard singing along to the old country and western tunes. Anyone who visited knew they were in for warm welcomes, tall tales and a freezer full of his favorite popsicles.

As a family, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his niece Cindy and Gerry Martell, brother-in-law Brian Mombourquette as well as friends Heather and Calvin, for being by our side. A heartfelt thank you to the team of nurses and doctors at the Strait Richmond Hospital, especially the Palliative Care Unit who helped Richard through his end-of-life care.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, as per Richard’s request. Graveside burial will take place later.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Richard to the Strait Richmond Palliative care society, the L’Ardoise Volunteer Fire Department or the Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia.
