MATTHEWS RATTRAY, Janet Isobel

Halifax, NS

September 19, 1939 - January 30, 2024

In loving memory of Janet Isobel Rattray Matthews, 84, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, who passed away on January 30, 2024, while living with Alzheimer's and a brief encounter with metastatic breast cancer.

Janet was born on September 19, 1939, to Donald Sheppard Rattray and Gwendolyn Gunn Roche in Montreal, Quebec. In 1957, Janet met her first husband, William Wright Badger, at Bishop's University, resulting in the beautiful and athletic quartet of Stacy, Jill, Willy, and Robyn. Other achievements from her time at BU include a legendary basketball hook shot and proudly graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 1976. A card-carrying member of ACTRA, Janet's theatrical journey featured appearances on SCTV and The Littlest Hobo before embarking on a full-time role at the Bank of Montreal, where she eventually retired. She enjoyed her crosswords, playing Scrabble and writing limericks. Janet cherished her time on Anna Maria Island, FL, snowbirding. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends.

Janet married another Bishop's grad, a Bishop's son, Peter Matthews, who shared a vibrant life in Toronto surrounded by dear friends.

Janet was predeceased by her sister Cathy Ord (Rose), her daughter Stacy Badger (Réal), and husband Peter Matthews and former husband William Badger. She leaves behind adored sisters Sandra (Doug), Martha (Harold), and Priscilla; her children, Jill Badger Caldwell (Cash), Willy Badger (Sumie), and Robyn Badger; treasured grandchildren Thomas Badger (Laura), Hugh Badger-Forand (Lauren), Sho Badger (Nia), Kai Badger and Ruby Badger; along with numerous beloved nephews, nieces, their children, extended step-family and loving relatives.

A celebration of Janet’s extraordinary life will be held on June 9, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Whitlock Golf and Country Club, 128 Côte St-Charles, Hudson, QC.

To pass on Janet's witty, creative spirit, we invite you to pen a limerick in her honour. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Bishop's University Drama Department https://www.ubishops.ca/alumni-relations-and-philanthropy-office/donate-now/, a fitting tribute to Janet's love for the stage and support for future dramatic talents.
