Reynolds, Alfred J.

(Historical Obituary)

Sydney, NS

April 16, 1915 - April 25, 1960

Alfred J. Reynolds, a junior partner in the accounting firm of Nightingale Hayman & Company and one of the community's most prominent citizens, passed away suddenly on Monday afternoon, April 25, 1960, following a heart seizure. Mr. Reynolds, born on April 16, 1915, was 45 years old. He suffered the attack just after he entered the Vogue Theater, where, as a member of the Sydney Rotary Club, he was to participate in a behind-the-scenes activity of the club's production, "Song of Norway".

Alfred Reynolds was the son of Mrs. Reynolds and the late Reverend A.J. Reynolds. He graduated from Mount Allison Academy in 1930 and a year later from the Normal College in Truro. Following his graduation from Normal College, he taught school for four years at Halls Harbor, Kings County, and Mulgrave High School. In 1935, he left teaching and took an office position with Imperial Oil in Halifax, where he remained for three years. He joined the accounting firm of Nightingale Hayman & Company in Halifax in 1942, and five years later was transferred to Sydney as manager of the local branch. Upon the death of Frank Nightingale, one of the firm's founders, Mr. Reynolds became a junior partner. He received his Chartered Accountant's degree in 1950.

Mr. Reynolds was a member of the First United Church and took an active interest in all church affairs. He was especially involved during the time when the church was being built on Whitney Avenue. He was a member of the Board of Stewards, an Elder, a choir member, and on occasion conducted Sunday School.

Mr. Reynolds also took an active interest in service organizations. He was a past president of the Sydney Rotary Club and one of the club's most ardent workers. He was a past president of the Y's Men's Club and also the past Maritime District Governor of the Y's Men. Mr. Reynolds took a keen interest in the YMCA movement in Sydney and was a past president of the organization.

He resided at 27 Park Street. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. A.J. Reynolds of Wolfville, now in Sydney; his wife, Helen (Murray) Reynolds; and their four sons, David, Bruce, Sandy, and 8-month-old Douglas. He is also survived by his brothers, Burton in Toronto and Reverend Alan Reynolds, who is presently taking his master's degree at Union Theological University in New York.

The remains will rest at the Fillmore Funeral Home until Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., when they will be taken to his residence at 27 Park Street. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, with a service at the First United Church at 2:00 p.m. Rev. E.B.S. Miller will conduct the services. Burial will follow at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

Alfred, or Alf as he was known to many, would be so happy to see how well his family has thrived. His firstborn son, David, married Gale Mitcham. His second son, Bruce, married Elaine MacDonald, and they have two children, David and Kate. Sandy married Carol MacLeod, and they have two boys, AJ and Stephen. Doug married Ann Sheree Lewis, and they have two children, Luke and Julie. Alf's great-grandchildren are Sydney, Kai, Jadyn, AJ, Callan, James, and Tilly Juniper.
