Sandalis, James

Coxheath, NS

March 25, 1940 - September 24, 2024

James Sandalis, 84, of Coxheath, passed away at home on September 24, 2024.

James “Jimmy” was born on March 25, 1940, to Emmanuel and Eumorfia Sandalis in the small mountain town of Pyrgos, on the island of Samos, Greece.

After finishing school and working on his family’s farm, he arrived in Sydney on January 1, 1959. Along with his brother, he moved to Halifax as a proprietor of the Morris Street Lunch on Hollis Street, where he married and started his family. Later, he moved back to Cape Breton Island for a four-year stop in Port Hawkesbury, where he and his wife ran the Buccaneer Lounge and Restaurant. Most will remember Jimmy as the General Manager of the iconic Smooth Herman’s Nightclub and Joe’s Warehouse Restaurant from 1980 to 2005. During these years, whether you knew it or not, Jimmy was the curator of your fun evening in downtown Sydney. He ensured that Smooth Herman’s had the best in live entertainment, a safe environment, a friendly and professional staff, and, best of all, the last bar to stop serving free pours. ;-)

Jimmy’s retirement included days spent woodworking in his garage, visiting grandchildren, and traveling annually back to Samos to tend to his garden. If you were lucky enough to visit him on his home turf, you would have experienced a time like no other.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was predeceased by his older brother, Anthony “Tony” Sandalis.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 63 years, Joan Sandalis (Wilson); two sons, Jimmie and Michael (Sue) Sandalis; loving grandchildren, Bryan, Nicole, Sophia, Steven and Ryan; and his in-laws, Dolly, Wendy and John Wilson.

Visitation will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, October 1st from 10 am-12 noon, followed by a private family graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Anargyree Greek Orthodox Church, Glace Bay https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-anargyree-greek-orthodox-church/
