New Glasgow, NS
March 25th, 2025
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved father and husband, David Michael Smith of 445 Willow Avenue, New Glasgow on March 25th, 2025.
Born in Kingston, NS, David grew up there, later moving to Fredericton, then New Glasgow where he retired from Sobey’s head office in 2012.
Growing up, he loved sports, especially baseball and hockey, and played from a child into adulthood, also coaching his son Matthew in hockey. A huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leaf’s, he never lost hope for a Stanley Cup win.
David cared deeply about his family and friends. As a teenager, he received a Red Cross citation for saving a friend’s life in an accident. He loved to bake, especially cookies, and always had a batch ready for anyone who he thought would enjoy them. After retirement, he then enjoyed taking over the cooking of meals. He appreciated comedy and loved a good laugh. His sense of humor and playful teasing nature often came out, with family and friends the recipient of his silly pranks and jokes. Dave was a collector. He enjoyed travelling locally, collecting many antiques and painting, and was as avid stamp collector, dedicating an entire room for his collection.
David is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Yvonne Smith, whom he loved so much; sons: Ian Jared Smith of New Glasgow, and Matthew Jon Smith (Lisa) of Lower Sackville; and grandchildren: Isabelle, Aidan and Abigail, who were the apple of his eye.
He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Olive McDow; and siblings: Leta Bruce (David), Watson Smith (Charlotte), Thelma Bishop (Jerry), and "Corky" Carroll Smith (Cindy); sister-in-law, Catherine MacIntosh (Donnie); brothers-in-law: Stephen McDow (Joanne), Jeffrey McDow (Rossalyn), Brian McDow (Michelle Keddy); and several nieces and nephews. He is now reunited with his parents, Wilfred and Doris Smith; father-in-law, Delbert McDow; his sister, Lova; brother, "Allie" Allison; and sister-in-law, Annette.
Thank you to all the doctors and nurses who cared for David throughout his illness. Your kindness and care were so greatly appreciated.
As per his wishes, there will be no visitation or service. A graveside family service will be held at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.
We love you, Dad, and know our paths will cross again.
