It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Bernice Steele, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at her home.
Born in Garnish, NL on April 9, 1935, Bernice was the daughter of Thomas and Winnie (Day) Grandy. She worked for many years with Canada Manpower as an employment counsellor, retiring in 1990.
Bernice was active with St. Matthew Wesley United Church in North Sydney. Her connection with the church began as a young girl, participating in CGIT programs, and it continued as an adult when she became St. Matthew Wesley's first female Clerk of Session. Bernice was an avid reader throughout her life and enjoyed her time with various book clubs, especially the Wilfred Oram Centennial Library club. Mom was a warm and gentle, kind and caring person, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Bernice is survived by her son Tom (Sarah), Leitches Creek; grandchildren Shanea Keaton and Keyanna (James) Houg; great-grandchildren Ja’Nia, Flora and Mckenna. She is also survived by her sisters Doris (Brian) Stanley, Bedford, and Jean (Garnet) Haley, Largo, FL.
Besides her parents,
Bernice was predeceased by her husband Bill, brother Larry Grandy and her sister Winnie (Eric) Walton.
There will be no visitation by request. A private, family graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
Charitable donations in Mom’s memory may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church or the Canadian Cancer Society.
