It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Monica. Born in River Bourgeois to Charles and Alvina (Landry) Richard, the 10th of 11 children.
As a young woman, Monica went to Montreal to train in hair dressing, then moved to Halifax to work in a salon. In 1951 Monica met her loving husband of 71 years, Joseph. They married in August of 1952, and moved to Toronto for 10 years, having their two sons Jimmy and Joey, before moving back to Cape Breton in 1962.
In 1965, Monica opened her salon where she styled hair for 21 years, before retiring, and taking care of her aging parents. After closing Monica’s Beauty Salon, she continued to serve the community by volunteering in the CWL, Royal Canadian Legion, Richmond County Senior’s Council, Strait Regional Hospital Advisory Board and Palliative Care, and was the President of the Palliative Care Society for a few years. Volunteering at the Legion was especially important to her, as Monica’s father and 6 of her brothers were veterans. Monica was known for her dedication to advocating for compassionate, end of life care. She will be remembered for her sense of humour, contagious laughter, life of the party personality, cooking and baking, and showing up at any bake sale in the county armed with sweets.
Monica is survived by her sons, Jimmy (Linda), Brooklyn Corner, and Joey (Joan), River Bourgeois, Grandson Daniel (Jennifer), Timberlea, Adored Great Grandchildren William and Sadie, Timberlea, and Granddaughter Ellen, Dartmouth.
Monica is predeceased by her husband, Joseph, parents, Charles and Alvina Richard, siblings Clarence Richard, Alfred Richard, Rita Landry, Egbert Richard, Martin Richard, Leo Richard, Fabian Richard, Anthony Richard, Geraldine Amero, John Richard.
