On Feb 10, 2024, Helen Mabel Matthews passed away peacefully with her family at her side.
She was a resident of Valley View Villa and she was two days away from her 93rd birthday.
Helen was born in Alma, NB on Feb 12, 1931, the only child of Charles and Mabel (Kelly) Sinclair. She moved to New Glasgow at a young age where she lived for many years with her husband, Herb "Hub" Watters, and her two children, Sylvia and Herb.
After her husband’s death, she married Murdock Matthews. They lived mostly in the Sydney area and then moved to Halifax after they retired. They loved to travel and spent most of their retirement years wintering in Florida where they made many friends and enjoyed the warm weather and sunshine.
Helen is survived by her 2 children, Sylvia (Bill) Fraser, Herb (Judy) Watters, and Murdock’s children, Sheldon (Wanda) Matthews, Sheila (Ed) Kita, Sherri Matthews (Kevin) Chapman, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She will be dearly missed by many.
Even though Mom faced increasing challenges due to vascular dementia, she never lost her sense of humour or her fighting spirit.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
