July 22, 1968 - February 21, 2025
Rodney Joseph "Rex" Young passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his fiance Nelishia Cremo and children.
Rodney was born on July 22, 1968 in Sydney, NS to his loving parents the late Mary Tena and late Walter Young Sr. He took pride in being raised and speaking the Mi'kmaq language in the largest Mi'kmaq community of Eskasoni. Rodney was also a member of the Holy Family Parish in Eskasoni. He took pride in music and singing in his Mi'kmaq language. He played many instruments including the guitar, harmonica, piano and fiddle.
Rodney was a dedicated fisherman for 20+ years for the Eskasoni Fisheries. Rodney's passion was being out at sea and practicing his rights to fish.
Rodney is survived by 5 daughters Tysha (Danny), Britina (Brooks), Delena (Gideon), Evelyn and Jada all of Eskasoni, 4 sons Bryce, Tyrone, Evander (Chaselyn) and Ta'tn all of Eskasoni and 10 grandchildren Courtes, Wyatt, Myles, Tasha, Virginia (Jenny), Jayla, Alaska, Makenna, Leia and Avaya. Rodney is also survived by siblings Walter Young jr., Fred Young, Eddie Young, Maynard Young (Jennifer), Isabel Young, Sandra Young, Eunice Cabot and Bernadina Young and best friends Michael Christmas, Chuck Gould, Donald Francis, Tokyo Herney, Amanda Johnson and his brothers as well as godchildren Tony Knockwood and MacKenzie Poulette all of Eskasoni, godfather Ben Sylliboy, aunt Mary Ellen Googoo, uncle Edward Joe and many nieces and nephews.
Rodney was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Mary Tena Young, sister Ann Poulette, brother Peter Young, nephew Douglas Young, great niece Cadence Young and godmother Theresa Marshall.
He will forever be missed.
A visitation will be held at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni on Thursday, March 6 starting at 7pm with a funeral mass taking place in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni on Saturday, March 8 at 10:00am. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery with a salite immediately following.
