  • Russell, James William (Jim)

Dartmouth, NS J. W. (Jim) RUSSELL - of Dartmouth, NS. After a prolonged battle with various cancers, I have come to the end of the road. I was the firstborn to parents Mary and Maurice Russell and was raised in Liverpool, NS. I was soon joined by a sister, Marylin (Peter), then a brother, Richard (Elaine), and finally another sister, Margie (Nigel), creating an incredibly tight sibling group. We were fortunate to have loving but firm parents. Among other guidelines we learned early you do not demand respect, it must be earned. Also, while others may look different they are equal. After leaving Mt. A, I spent the next 45 years in the financial field, including Bank Manager, Trust Company Executive, and operating my own Financial Planning operation. I enjoyed working with people and assisting them with their financial goals. During my journey, I was blessed to have Linda, a wonderful partner for 59 years. Joining us were daughters, Susan (Paul) Russell McGrath and Kathy Russell, both of Dartmouth. Our grandchildren, Andrew James and Jennifer Mary Russell McGrath were the source of much joy - if I had known they were this great I would have had them first! I was a keen golfer and I enjoyed listening to "good music". I also spent many hours in my workroom as an amateur carpenter. Linda and I enjoyed travel, ballroom dancing and actively participating as elders in our church. We also enjoyed many family occasions at our summer cottages in Hunts Point. A church service will be held on February 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 216 School Street, Dartmouth, NS. I will be cremated and later, with a family gathering, be put to final rest. If you are so inclined, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

  • Griffin, Stuart Bruce

Port Williams, NS August 30, 1939 - January 17, 2025 Stuart Bruce Griffin – age 85, of Port Williams, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Valley Hospice, Kentville, surrounded by his family. Born August 30, 1939 in Wolfville, Stuart was a son of the late Bernard and Edith (Conley) Griffin. Stuart lived a life devoted to family and community. As an active member of the Port Williams Volunteer Fire Department for the last 65 years, Stuart served his community with honour and integrity; building relationships in many of the volunteer departments throughout the valley and beyond. His passion for helping others was evident throughout his life. From sharing the crops in his garden, answering calls from neighbours, friends and family anytime of the day or night when there was an issue to cooking the chicken for the annual PWVFD chicken BBQ – Stuart was there with a smile on his face and most likely something witty to say. It was during Stuart’s volunteer years that he met the love of his life, his late wife of 35 years, Audrey (Messem), who filled his life with laughter, unconditional love and burnt potatoes. Stuart would smile, make a witty remark and continue with the meal. We believe that this became the normal for Stuart and he just rolled with it, just like he did most of his life. Stuart’s honesty, loyalty, supportiveness, unwavering kindness, commitment, unconditional love and his ability to mentor were qualities that anyone who came in contact with him quickly learned about him. Whether it was teaching his children how to do math or choosing the right thing to do for each of them, to passing along all of his knowledge about fighting fires and how to prevent fires, Stuart would share his experiences so that others could learn from him and then take that knowledge and apply it to their own choices in life.
