  • BURKE, Ruth Marleine (Sue)

    Berwick, NS January 15, 2024 Ruth Marleine "Sue" Burke, age 85, of Berwick, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024, in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Sue was born in Timmins, ON and was a daughter of the late Henry and Leila (Pitt) Welin. She worked as a medic in the Royal Canadian Air Force before becoming an insurance agent. She worked at Cleveland Insurance and loved the Cleveland family. Sue began her involvement in the sport of figure skating at an early age in Timmons, ON. She eventually moved to Greenwood with her husband, Sonny, and children, Christopher and Kelly. Following membership in the Wolfville Skating Club, she then became a founding member and the first President of the Greenwood Skating Club. It wasn’t long before she was the Valley Area Coordinator where, among other activities, she introduced both skaters and judges to development programs. As a member of the Nova Scotia Section Board of Directors, she served as Awards Chair, Skater Development Chair and was the Sections First Precision Chair. She also found herself sitting on both the Section’s Competitions and Judges Committees. She became Section Chair in 1978. Sue evaluated tests at the Junior Silver Free Skate and Dance levels as well as the Bronze/Adult Artistic level and judged at the Novice competitive level. However, she developed a wonderful aptitude and true love for the discipline of Precision skating, now known as Synchronized skating. Sue was a Gold level test Evaluator and Canadian Competitive level Synchronized skating judge and her enthusiasm in this area greatly influenced its growth throughout Nova Scotia. She was the recipient of the Sport Nova Scotia Award in 1982 and the Elizabeth Swan Award in 2000. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Kelly (Doug) Bodie; son, Christopher; grandchildren, Kaila and Steven; brothers, Eric (Margie) and Brian; several nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Stanley "Sonny" in 2022; sister, Diane and brother, Dwight. Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Sue’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.

    Rhodes Corner, NS January 23, 2024 LOHNES, Sheila Rose - 74 of Rhodes Corner, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2024 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Bridgewater, she was a daughter of the late Malcolm and Helen "Freda" (Bruhm) Whynot. Mom was a kind soul with a big heart. She loved her family and friends and was loved by them in return. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was always there to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed playing bingo with her "Bingo Buddies"; the social aspect being the most important, but it was always a bonus if she won some cash too. She was very creative and a talented crafter, having won many prizes for her crafts at the Bridgewater Big Ex, and also did a rug hooking demonstration there. She enjoyed knitting, crochet, rug hooking, quilting and sewing. For many years, she was a seamstress for Suttles and Seawinds in New Germany. Mom had an amazing smile, even when she was feeling ill. Surviving are her husband Roger; children Randy and Tereasa (Ronald); siblings Rayburn, Patsy, Marilyn, Ronald, Raymond and Sylvia; grandchildren Jacob, Megan, Weston; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Linda. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday in R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. Rev. Dr. Doug Mailman officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.   • MADER, Beaufort Louis

    Bridgetown, NS April 6, 1933 - January 15, 2024 MADER, Beaufort Louis “Beau” ~ Age 90, went to Heaven very peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2024, surrounded by his large family. Beau was born April 06, 1933, to the late Louis and Ann (Firth) Mader in Shelburne, NS. He was dearly loved. Beau is survived by his wife, Athena (Devine) Mader; children, Charlotte Anne (Ben) Carter; Sandra (Ron) Cox; Robert (Susan) Mader; and Kathryn (Kirby) Smith; also, brother, Gary Mader; nine grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. Besides his parents, Beau was predeceased by his brother, George; son, Larry; and granddaughter, Holly Spears. Beau served five years in the Royal Canadian Navy, after which he worked mainly in sales until he and Athena purchased G.H. Compton Insurance Agency as their family business until retirement. Beau had many interests and hobbies. He played guitar professionally as a young man, and then for his family throughout his life. He loved sailing, farm animals and pets (He was a founding member of the Mader Family Farm), and winters in Florida. His greatest love was family, and he delighted in hosting family meals, sing-a-longs, and a good game of 45’s. Athena and the family would like to thank the staff of the Veteran’s wing of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital for their love, compassion, and excellent care over the last year.     Liverpool, NS January 11, 2024 Smith, Julian R. C., 27, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away suddenly in Liverpool on January 11, 2024. Born in Liverpool, Julian was a son of Byron Smith (Zena Foote) and Angela Morris (David Whalen).Julian loved four wheeling and working on cars. The greasier he was, the better! His boys were his life.Besides his parents, Julian is survived by his sons Shane and Thomas, their mother Melissa Buchanan and stepdaughter Jamie Buchanan of Shelburne.   • Riddle, Gail M. "Gay" Riddle

    Kentville, NS March 29, 1941 - January 16, 2024 Following a rich, full life of service and love, Gay, age 82, passed away gently and peacefully at Valley Hospice, Kentville, on January 16, 2024 with Peter, her husband of sixty-one years, holding her hand. She did it all: career woman, devoted mother and grandmother, dedicated foster parent in both Nova Scotia and the State of Illinois, talented editor of and contributor to her husband’s writings, staunch supporter of animal welfare, and faithful volunteer at Valley Regional Hospital. Gay also served on the Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and did volunteer work with Kosovo refugees at Aldershot. Born in western New York State on March 29, 1941, she was the instigating force behind her family’s move to Nova Scotia during Canada’s Centennial Year of 1967, and treasured her citizenship in her adopted country and province. She served the Bank of Montreal as Senior Teller and Acadia University in the Housing Department and as Director of Conference Services. She loved and was loved by son Kendrick (Betty); daughter Anne (Kevin Moggy, deceased, and Bill Molnar); grandsons Alexander and Steven Moggy, and granddaughter Sidney Riddle. The family is indebted to friends and medical professionals whose outstanding care and attention eased Gay’s final years, especially family physician Dr. Hazen Burton, VG Hospital oncologist Dr. Katherina Kieser, the compassionate nurses and caregivers of Valley Hospice and the Victorian Order of Nurses, tireless 911 Emergency Medical Services workers, dedicated staff members at Valley Regional Hospital and Eastern Kings Memorial Health Center, Cochrane’s Pharmacy in Wolfville, and the Canadian Red Cross. Cremation was entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home. At Gay’s request, there will be neither funeral nor visitation. Donations in her memory will be welcomed by the Valley Hospice Foundation and other medical care providers, animal welfare organizations, or a charity of one’s choice.

  • FITZGERALD, Kenneth George (Ken)

    Queensport, NS January 14, 2024 Kenneth George "Ken" Fitzgerald – 67 – Queensport, passed away Sunday January 14th, 2024, at Guysborough Memorial Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late James and Helen (LLoy) Fitzgerald. Ken is survived by his partner of over 40 years, Charles "Chuck" Tovey.  He and Chuck shared many years together in Queensport where they enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, and volunteering in the preparation of community dinners to support the local Catholic parish.  Ken and Chuck’s chihuahuas Duke and Dutchess and dachshunds Gertrude and Gunther were very special to both of them. Before moving to Queensport, Ken worked in both the insurance and hardware fields. Besides Chuck, he is survived by his brother James (Julia), Bridgewater, Keith, Antrim; sister Sharon (Azur) Smajlovic, Halifax; and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; sisters-in-law Pauline (James’ former wife) and Shirley (Keith’s former wife). Cremation has taken place with a graveside service to be held in Queensport at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.     Morden, NS January 17, 2024 It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of our mother Sally Marie Janes (91, of Morden, NS). Our mother passed away peacefully with her family by her side, January 17, 2024. Marie, by the wings of an angel has been lifted up to dwell within the presence of our Lord in Heaven. Marie is predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Roy Elwin Janes, parents, Michael Murphy, and Rita (Hall) Murphy, brother John (Carmel), and sisters Eileen (Michael Cleary), and Paula (Frank Buck). Marie is survived by her five children Michael (Mary Ann), Edmonton AB, Paula (Mark Woodland), Kingston NS, Rick (Donna), Beaverbank NS, Chris (Cathy), Kingston NS and John (Teresa), Morden NS. Marie is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and another great grandson due in February. Marie enjoyed sewing, porcelain dolls, gardening, knitting and crocheting. She took immense joy knitting small hats and baby blankets, donating them to be given out to newborns in local hospitals. Held tightly in our hearts and forever missed.

    Baker Settlement, NS December 18, 1953 - January 12, 2024 Edward Joseph Jesso, 70 years old of Baker Settlement passed away on January 12, 2024 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born on December 18, 1953 t home in Ship Cove, Port au Port NL, to the late Howard and Alma (Young) Jesso. Eddy came to Nova Scotia at the age of 13 and he went on the scallop boats until his retirement. He is survived by his wife Sharon (Veinot) (Tanner) Jesso; son Rodney Jesso; stepson Jonathan (Holly) Tanner; stepdaughter Lisa-Mae (Adam) Eisenhauer; grandson Antonio Jesso; step grandson Austin Tanner; sisters Mercedes (Roy) Dunn, Kentucky, USA; Patricia (Wayne) Lucas, Alice Benoit, Ann Bullen (Carl Benoit), all of NL; several nieces, nephews and godchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Donald and Rodney Jesso; sister-in-law Patsy Benoit. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.   • Hatt, John “Jack” Arnold

    Liverpool, NS January 12, 2024 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Arnold (Jack) Hatt on January 12, 2024 at Queens General Hospital in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Jack was born to Arnold and Kay Hatt in Milton, Nova Scotia. He married Nancy Vaughn and they had three children Jeff, Tony and Valerie. Jack was an active member of his community and served as the Director of the Milton Community Association for a number of years. He retired at age 55 from Bowater Mersey after more than 30 years of service. He had many hobbies including curling, hunting, fishing, shuffling, bowling and horseshoes. He could often be found in his workshop making something for someone in the family. Jack was a craftsman and built everything from lawn chairs and outdoor Christmas decorations to cutting boards and whirlygigs. Each piece was meticulously constructed and built to stand the test of time. Jack was loved by many for his winning personality and quick wit. He would strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone and never lacked for something interesting to talk about. If you had the pleasure of taking a drive anywhere on the South Shore with Jack, you will know that he had a comical story to tell for pretty much every kilometer driven. Usually those stories were about him and old friends or his brothers when they were young and up to no good! Jack’s family brought him tremendous amount of joy, he so loved family visits and gatherings. He brought fun and laughter to each and every event. He loved to travel and looked forward to his winter vacation in Florida or Cuba where he formed many long lasting friendships. In later years he could be counted on to update you ( whether you were a fan or not) on how his beloved Blue Jays baseball team was doing and where the Canadian teams were in the Curling finals. He looked forward to drives in the woods with his son and grandson and was an expert Face timer when it came to his granddaughters who are away from home. Jack is survived by his wife Nancy, son Jeff Hatt (Lesley), daughter Valerie Hawkes (Paul), grandchildren John David Hatt (Jessie), Jan Smith (Aiden), Julie Ann Hatt, Lori Anthony, Chris Hawkes, Abbey Hawkes and Great Grandchildren Dayton and Hayden Robar, sisters Mary Sedran and Pam Crouse (Greg) and brother David Hatt (Bonnie) . Jack was predeceased by his son Tony, grandson Andrew, sister Shirley and brother Richard. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, Nova Scotia. At Jack’s request, there will be no service at this time, no flowers by request, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia or to a charity of choice.     Oxford, NS January 21, 1928 - January 11, 2024 Chapman, Ralph - 95, Oxford, passed away January 11th, 2024 in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Earl and Lean (Haliday). For many years, Ralph was a supervisor at Gordon's Greenhouses. He later worked with Bendix Trailer, formerly in Amherst. Ralph enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling and raising hens. He is survived by daughters, Linda (Sherman) Lockhart, Oxford; Barbara (Pete) Russo; Exeter, Ont.; Betty (Gordon) Porter, Oxford Junction; grandchildren, Billy Chapman, Kenny Lockhart, Jennifer Morrison, Mike Ford and Deanna Edwards; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Isabelle Lovely and Shirley Rector; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Grace Black; brother, Bill Chapman; sister, Annie Porter. The family would like to thank the staff at East Cumberland Lodge and MacDiarmid's Funeral Home.   • OUELLETTE, John Victor

    Port Hawkesbury, NS August 23, 1938 - January 15, 2024 John Victor Ouellette (Jack) passed away Monday, Jan 15th, 2024, at St. Martha’s hospital, in the company of Peggy, his wife of over sixty years. Jack was born in 1938 to Josephine and Victor Ouellette and raised in Amherstburg Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy, graduated from Canada’s Naval College, Venture and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant. While studying Jack had the chance to try flying, and he decided to become a naval aviator. He trained with the US Navy and after having flown various planes and helicopters from HMCS Bonaventure, and Shearwater he left the Navy in 1963. Jack and Peggy returned to Amherstburg and he studied at the Detroit School of Fine Arts to pursue his love of art. There he was introduced to pottery, and when the couple moved their young family to Dartmouth, Jack graduated with his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1972, Peggy was hired by the Richmond District School Board and the Ouellettes moved to Arichat, Cape Breton. It is there that Jack opened his pottery studio and where he practiced and refined his craft for the next 40 years. His work was available in art and craft galleries large and small all over Nova Scotia. Jack was a man of high principles and a strong social justice advocate. He challenged himself, his family, his friends and his community to be better, to consider those less fortunate, and was always willing to express his beliefs to whomever would listen. He was active in his church, an active member of the New Democratic Party and a founding member of the Strait Area Palliative Care Society. Jack battled mental health his whole life and was open and honest about this illness long before our society was comfortable with the subject. Jack and Peggy built a life and a home that was open to so many over the years. Their house in Arichat has been a gathering place for many debates, celebrations, and became a home for a large extended circle of friends. Jack had two sisters, Judy (Joel Bezaire) and Pat (Paul Bondy) and three brothers, Tom (Sandy), Donald, and Tim (who passed away at  age 18). Jack and Peggy lost an infant son, Timothy, and raised two sons John (Linda) and Michael (Monique). His pride and joy were his four grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah, Shannon and Timmy. Jack will be greatly missed by his family and especially his wife and partner Peggy. His legacy lives on in those he touched over his lifetime and in the thousands of kitchens all over the world where people use and admire his pottery. A Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will happen later this year. In honour of Jack, please consider a donation to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society.

  • BOUTILIER STANDING, Florence Christine

    Point Aconi, NS October 18, 1938 - January 15, 2024 It is with tremendous grief that we announce the sudden passing of Florence Christine Boutilier, age 85, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, on Monday, January 15, 2024. Born in North Sydney on October 18, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence (Murray) Standing. Florence was a proud member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 19, in North Sydney where she played plenty of darts and adored going to the dances. She enjoyed playing cards, especially with some of the other women in her family that got together frequently. She was an avid crocheter, knitter, embroiderer, and sewer. She absolutely loved to swim, especially in the ocean, but also in the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes. She was also a fine cook, but most especially she was a fantastic wife and mother. Family was the most important thing in her life. Florence is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Wallace; her children Lana (Chris) Sachs, Tommy (Brenda) Boutilier, Cheryl (Richard) Abromeit, and Joanne MacEachern; grandchildren Mitchell Eveleigh, Justin Eveleigh, Hayley Eveleigh (Austin Stewart), Sierra Abromeit, Christina (Evan) Leslie; great-grandchildren Layton Leslie, Rowan Leslie, and Dante Eveleigh; brothers Bob Standing and Tommy (Elizabeth) Standing. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Lillian Gordon; brother Bill Standing; grandson Michael Sachs; sister-in-law Joyce Standing, and her treasured dog, Holly. Special thanks to Werner Abromeit for his care and friendship over the last number of years. A visitation for Florence will be held between 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19 at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant, North Sydney. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Marjorie Serafinus officiating.
