  • DOREY, Laurie Albert

New Ross, NS January 22, 2024 Dorey, Laurie Albert, 81, of New Ross, NS, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by his family. Born in South Alton, he was a son of the late Arthur William and Annie Louise (Knockwood) Dorey. Laurie was a man with an unbeatable work ethic. He worked as a carpenter with a career spanning over 50 years. Throughout his career, he was involved in many big projects, including when he was appointed Shop Steward during the construction of the Coldbrook and District School. In addition to his carpentry skills, Laurie was a skilled mechanic and could fix anything with an engine. He was very mechanically gifted; it appeared all Laurie needed to do was listen to your car and he could tell you what was wrong with it. These skills he passed on to his sons so they could repair their vehicles. He always said a job worth doing was a job worth doing well – always give your best. When he wasn’t hard at work, Laurie loved to be in the woods, fishing, snowmobiling or cutting wood. His favourite pastime, however, was hunting with his sons. He was an avid hunter who also would trap fox, rabbits, beavers and bobcats, hunt for deer, and he especially enjoyed trips to the Cape Breton Highlands to hunt moose. While in the earlier days he may not have caught much with six boys trailing behind him, he raised them all to be accomplished hunters and outdoors-oriented men. Laurie was also known to be incredibly strong, having a perfect arm-wrestling record with his boys. After one match, the boys realized how truly strong their father was. He was very principled and could also be quite headstrong and direct – you would certainly know where you stood with him, but this never overshadowed his giving nature - he was a man who would do anything for anyone. Laurie took great pride in his Mi’kma’ki heritage. He so enjoyed his pleasant discourses with DNR officials on Mi’kmaq Treaty Rights. Laurie is survived by wife, Kathy Lorraine (Salsman) Dorey, sons; John William, Laurie Allan, Brian Kevin, Timothy Albert, Toney Stephen, Jeffrey Myles, and daughter, Ronda Lee Toney (Dorey); brothers, Millage and Edward Dorey, many grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren as well a numerous nieces and nephews. As well as his parents, Laurie was predeceased by brother, Henry Dorey; sisters, Hattie Sproule and Florence Campeau as well as his first wife Betty Lyle Reese. As per Laurie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. Family will be having an informal celebration of life so that his many family and friends can enjoy time together sharing stories and food. Celebration of life will be held on February 3, 2024 from 1-5pm at the Forties Community Center, 1787 Forties Rd, New Ross. Laurie’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of Valley Regional Hospital and Sipekne’katik Heath Center for their care of Laurie, and to the Sipekne’katik staff of Jordan’s Principle for all of their help. You will be in our hearts and minds forever. Donations in memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society. • LLOYD, Shirley Anne Ruth

Kentville, NS January 18, 2024 Shirley Anne Ruth Lloyd, age 54, passed away peacefully at home in Kentville on January 18, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. When we think of Shirley Anne, we think of "Shir", "Auntie Shirry", or "Jeep Girl". We remember and cherish her kindness and generous nature. Shirley’s presence was captivating, and her smile could instantly warm your heart. She was well known for her long flowing hair, her great sense of humour, and the empathy and compassion she gave freely. Those closest to her truly felt her genuine love and respect. She cultivated a life full of love for family and friends with a special place in her heart for her partner, Michael, and her dogs. Shirley found enjoyment in travelling, good music, watching movies with a bag of buttery popcorn, eating a delicious meal with a side of fries, hiking, going to the beach or seashore, and driving her Jeeps. Shirley’s style was impeccable. She adored shopping and may have needed more than one closet for her many clothes and shoes, but that was okay because a girl likes options! Shirley Anne was well-respected in the community for her work as a real estate agent. Her impressive career with Royal LePage Atlantic spanned over 20 years. During that time, she received many prestigious awards. She was honoured multiple times with the President’s Gold Award, the Award of Excellence, and the Director’s Platinum Award. Dedication and passion were apparent in all aspects of her work and clients often became lifelong friends. Above all the accolades, Shirley was proudest of her daughter, Rachel. They had a unique and unbreakable bond as mother and daughter, filled with unconditional love. She spoke fondly of the many special moments they shared together, like camping trips and singing "You are my Sunshine". Shirley admitted that she wasn’t much for singing on key, but Rachel had the voice of an angel to balance it out. She was so proud of the beautiful, kind, thoughtful, strong woman she has become. "We are born of love; love is our mother." – Rumi Words she lived by that were a hallmark of her positive mindset ring true in her favourite phrase: "hope for the best and handle the rest." As a tribute to Shirley, the next time you see a "real" Jeep on the road (not a "grocery getter", as Shirley said), be sure to give the Jeep Wave, and think of her driving with the roof off, singing loudly, living life to the fullest, with her hair blowing in the wind! Left to mourn are her loving daughter, Rachel Smith; partner, Michael Shewchuk; mother, Ruth (Burgher) Lloyd; sisters, Sarah "Sally" Walsh, Beth Lloyd, Mary Lloyd; Bichon Frisé, Sammy; best friend, Kerina Dykstra; and much loved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Frederick "Ted" Lloyd; brother, David Gordon Lloyd; and first puppy, Cricket. There will be no funeral, at Shirley’s request. A private family graveside service will be held in the Spring. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care of Dr. Gunn, Dr. Morgan and the QEII Staff, Annapolis Valley Palliative Care Program, Annapolis Valley VON, VRH Oncology Unit, and everyone who offered comfort to Shirley during her illness. If you wish to make a donation in her memory, please consider the Cancer Care for Patients - Valley Regional Hospital, Chrysalis House, VON, or a charity of your choice. "She was spiritual and knew better than anyone that souls do not disappear. Light does not disappear." -Jessica Anderson, Editor, Christy Ottaviano Books

  • CHAMBERS, Nancy Lee

Dartmouth, NS October 8, 1948 - January 22, 2024 On Monday morning, January 22nd, 2024, Nancy Lee (Walker) Chambers passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Ivany Place Northwood in Bedford , Nova Scotia. A life of courage, grace and near infinite kindness had come to an end. Born October 8th, 1948 in Montreal, Quebec, she was the second daughter of Eileen and Keith Walker. Following high school, Nancy studied secretarial arts at the Mother House in Montreal before enrolling at Mount Allison University in 1967. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1970, her Bachelor of Education in 1971 and married David at the end of that year. As an example of her unique brand of determination, she committed herself to building her life in the Maritimes a thousand kilometres from home, seldom going back for visits and always preferring her family to visit her here. In her youth, Nancy carried the kind of beauty that could elevate the pulse of strangers on the street. A friend once curiously quipped, “No woman has ever looked better driving a beautiful car!” She didn’t give this gift two thoughts and lived her entire life without one moment of vanity. She relished the challenges of her early teaching career and readily accepted the inconveniences and hardships of life in the country. But when faced with a situation of patent unfairness, she’d pocket the smiles, square her shoulders and stand her ground against any adversary. Nancy taught at Tantramar High School in Sackville, New Brunswick for 30 years. Although initially planning to teach Home Economics, that never happened and she spent most of her career teaching business education and chairing that department. Nancy’s life was only a little about work and all about family and friends. Her two children, Anne and Robert, are the thoughtful people they are today because of her tireless nurturing and soft-spoken encouragement. She loved all of her friends, and especially Jane who she revered and with whom she felt most at home. Nancy loved summers spent at her cottage at Amherst Shore: the last unfulfilled wishes she expressed were to go back to the shore. To honour that request, a celebration of Nancy’s life will be hosted at her cottage (57 Aggermore Point Ln) on June 15th. Nancy will be forever missed by her husband, David, daughter Anne Stokes and Rick, son Robert and Claire, grandchildren Walker, Lochlan and Ophelia and sister Dianne. She was predeceased by Brit and Hawthorn, two high spirited Brittany Spaniels, with whom she had very special relationships.

  • MORYKOT, Michael Joseph

Whitney Pier, NS July 30, 1940 - January 20, 2024 It is with great sadness that we, the family of Michael Joseph Morykot, announce his passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his family in the early evening on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Born in Sydney on July 30, 1940, Mike was the son of the late John and Mary (Mrazek) Morykot. He grew up on Kitchener Street in Whitney Pier. Dad was a devoted husband, father and grandfather during all the days of his life. He was very proud of us all. He will be dearly missed. Dad loved music and took accordion lessons at a very young. We have beautiful memories of him pulling his accordion out only at Christmas and Easter. He could always play a polka anytime he was asked. Dad didn’t have one career in his lifetime, he had two. He was an employee of the Sydney Steel Corporation for 33 years. In 2002, he became a Security Guard with Maritect and then Palladin Security for a combination of 19 years. Many of these years were spent at the Port of Sydney greeting the crew ship passengers and then at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital greeting people and doing patient watch shifts for families in need. He felt very honored to play this role in people’s lives. He once said, “I know when people are born, and I know when people die.” He treasured the friendships made over the years in both professions. Mike was also a baseball player for 30 years and a bowler for 50 years where he won many awards and trophies. Up until he passed, he told the doctors, nurses and Emergency Health Service attendants that he felt he was in pretty good shape because he was an athlete for so many years. Dad also loved the outdoors. He spent many of his years at the bungalow on Horne’s Road just down from his mother’s home and his grandfather’s sawmill. “We’re going out the country” were the words we heard as kids on a hot summer’s day. Dad grew up there, he raised his family there in the summers and as an avid gardener, he had a vegetable garden there up until this summer when he found out he was ill. If he wasn’t there in the woods, he was up the mountain at his brother’s cottage hunting with a group of their friends or clearing the trees with our uncle. After he retired the second time, he focused on his family, on his gardens in the summer, gathering and cutting wood for his furnace in the fall and bingo 3-4 times a week with his bingo buddies while they played Tarbish two hours before it started. A huge part of Dad’s service work was being a brother of the Knights of Columbus for 61 years with Council 1060 Sydney and recently a new member of the Sydney River Council 9476. As a fourth-degree knight, he was a part of fundraising with the spaghetti dinners, he bowled and played hockey with the KOC and was a very active member with a number of projects that the KOC initiated during his time. The St. Joseph’s Men’s Club was also a fundraising venture that he sold tickets for. If you saw him in the bowling alley during his bowling nights, he would usually hit you up to buy a ticket for one of these causes. Mike was a dedicated Catholic, a member of a number of churches over the years including St. Mary’s Polish Church in Whitney Pier and a Knights of Columbus volunteer with Mass for Shut-ins for 61 years. He was the oldest original surviving member of Mass for Shut-ins until his passing and received recognition for his years of dedicated service. “Since its first broadcast in March 1963, this television ministry of our diocese has provided faithful service to its viewers who now tune in from locations across Canada.” Mike is survived by his wife, Juanita (Campbell) Morykot; daughters, Maura Lea Morykot (Jamie Foulds) and Tracy (Terrance Smith); grandchildren, Aidan, Kyra, Dylon and Cole; sister, Linda Morykot (Con Banfield); brother, John (Deannie), and his many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his uncle, Joe Mrazek and numerous cousins on the Mrazek side of his family that he has had cherished times with during his younger years and during a few family reunions in Mira. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his in-laws, Sarah and Maurice Campbell; a number of aunts and uncles, and his niece Raylene Morykot. Special thank you to all the doctors who provided care, especially Dr. French, Dr. Morash, Dr. Lucas, Dr. Poulus, Dr. D’Intino, Dr. Journeau, and Dr. Burns. Also, a huge thank you to all of the VON nurses and Palliative Care nurses who took amazing care of our father and surrounded him with care and compassion while he was in the last days of his life. In lieu of flowers, please know that your expressions of friendship mean more than material gifts. If desired, and if you wish to consider a small monetary contribution to assist the family with expenses incurred near the end of Mike’s life, an e-transfer can be sent to jmorykot@gmail.com Visitation for the late Michael Morykot will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Polish Church, 21 Wesley Street, Sydney, with Father Bedford Doucette officiating with a reception to follow. Interment will take place Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
